Figures released by Trocaire at the launch of its Christmas gifts campaign show that people in Carlow and Kilkenny are very generous when it comes to spending on ethical Christmas gifts.

Christmas shoppers in Kilkenny spent €37,015 on Trocaire’s ethical Christmas gifts, while people in Carlow spent €22,095.

“People from Carlow and Kilkenny are clearly becoming more ethically and globally aware at Christmas and this is evident through their high level of support for Trocaire’s Global Gifts,” stated Justin Kilcullen, director of Trocaire.

“Global Gifts has raised over €18 million for vital development initiatives since its inception seven years ago.

People from Kilkenny and Carlow have always shown immense support for Trocaire’s work and we hope that they will continue to support Global Gifts again this Christmas,” he added.

This year Trocaire is offering nine life changing gifts, which include school packs for Burmese refugee children. The gifts range in value from fifteen to two hundred euros and include chicks that will provide eggs for families devastated by HIV and AIDS in east Africa, seeds and trees for families in central Africa, and survival kits for refugee families in Uganda returning home having been driven out by war.

You will also have the opportunity to give the gift of water to help communities all over the world and contribute towards building houses for families in India.

Speaking at the launch of Global Gifts, Justin Kilcullen highlighted the human rights violations carried out in Burma. “As the world focuses on the recent protests by monks inside Burma, it is important to remember the thousands of refugees who have fled their homes.

“Over 154,000 Burmese refugees are now living in camps on the Thai-Burma border. They are not allowed to leave the camps and have no employment and no income while they are there,” he concluded.
